The Butler’s Book, published by SLANT, LLC | Effective 10, October 2026
The short version
The Butler’s Book is licensed to you through the App Store under Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement. These terms add what Apple’s agreement doesn’t cover: label scanning, Full Service, and sharing a collection. Your collection belongs to you. The book’s tasting notes and drinking windows are estimates, so treat them as a starting point and not as advice. If anything here conflicts with Apple’s agreement, Apple’s agreement takes precedent.
Your collection is yours
Everything you put in the book (your wines, photographs, notes, spaces, and house rules) belongs to you and is stored in your own iCloud account. SLANT holds no copy of it and claims no rights to it. When you scan a label or ask Full Service to fill in a wine’s details, you allow us to pass that photograph or those details to Anthropic’s Claude so the request can be answered, and for nothing else. The Privacy Policy explains exactly what is sent and what is kept.
Because your collection lives in iCloud, it depends on Apple’s service being available and on your iCloud storage. We recommend exporting your collection now and then (Settings › Your Collection › Sharing & Data › Export as Spreadsheet) so you always have your own copy.
Free and Full Service
The book is free to use with any number of wines. Adding wines by hand, importing a list, exporting, share cards, and Apple TV are free and will stay free. Each device includes ten free label scans to try the book, and only a scan that successfully reads a label counts against them.
Full Service is an optional subscription that adds sharing a collection with your household, more than one collection, filling in notes, regions, and styles for wines you didn’t scan, and 150 label scans a month. Its current price is shown in the app and on the App Store before you buy.
Subscriptions and billing
Full Service is sold and billed by Apple through your Apple Account. It renews automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. You can cancel or change your plan at any time in your iPhone’s Settings › your name › Subscriptions, or from the book at Settings › Subscription › Manage Subscription. Cancelling stops the next payment, and Full Service continues until the end of the period you have paid for. Refunds are handled by Apple under Apple’s policies; SLANT, LLC cannot issue or refuse them.
If we change the price, Apple will tell you beforehand, and where Apple’s rules require it, the new price won’t apply until you agree to it.
If Full Service ends
Nothing in your book is hidden or deleted. You can still browse, search, uncork, export, and share cards. Your oldest collection stays fully usable, and any others become read-only until you subscribe again. Scanning goes back to whatever is left of your free scans.
Scanning allowances
Allowances are counted by our scan service, not by the app. To keep scanning affordable for everyone, scanning may pause you reach your monthly limit. The book will tell you when this happens, and scanning resumes once the limit resets. We may change allowances for future periods, and the app will tell you before a change takes effect. A change will never reduce what you have already paid for in the current period.
Sharing a collection
When you share a collection, everyone you invite can see it, and anyone you give editing permission to can add, change, and remove its wines and house rules. Choose who you invite with care, since changes they make reach your devices too. Scans into a collection you have shared count against your own Full Service allowance. If you stop sharing, the people you invited lose access to the collection.
Estimates and AI-generated content
Tasting notes, regions, styles, and drinking windows filled in by the book are produced by an AI model from the label or the wine’s details. They can be wrong. A drinking window is a general estimate for that kind of wine and vintage, not a judgement about your particular bottle or how it has been stored. Nothing in the book is professional advice about wine, its value, or its condition. Always check the details that matter to you.
Find This Wine Online searches with your own search engine. The results come from that search engine, and SLANT, LLC has no relationship with any seller that appears in them.
Fair use
Please use the book as it is intended. Don’t try to get around scanning allowances, tamper with or overload our scan service, or reverse engineer the app except where the law allows it. Only scan photographs of wine labels, and nothing unlawful. We may stop the scan service from answering a device that misuses it.
Age
The Butler’s Book is about wine. It is intended for people of legal drinking age where they live.
No warranty
We work hard to make the book reliable, but it is provided as it is and as available, without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. We don’t promise that scanning will always be available or always be accurate.
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, SLANT, LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential losses arising from your use of the book. SLANT’s total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid for Full Service in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here limits rights that the law of your country says can’t be limited.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of South Carolina, and any dispute will be heard in the courts of Greenville County, South Carolina. If you live in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or another place whose consumer laws give you the right to bring a claim where you live, those rights still apply.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, we will post the new version here and update the date at the top. If a change materially affects what you have paid for, the app will tell you before it takes effect.
