The Butler’s Book, published by SLANT, LLC | Effective 10, October 2026
The short version
The Butler’s Book has no account. You never give us a name, an email address, or a password, and there is nothing for you to sign up for. Your collection is kept in your own iCloud, in your own Apple Account, and SLANT holds no copy of it.
Two things leave your phone, and only when you ask for them: a photograph of a label when you scan one, and a wine’s written details when Full Service fills in its region, style, and tasting note. Both go to Anthropic’s Claude to be read. Everything else below is the detail behind those two sentences.
We run no analytics, carry no advertising identifiers, and include no third-party tracking software of any kind.
Where your collection lives
Your wines, photographs, spaces, house rules, and settings are stored on your device and synced through your own iCloud account, the same way your photographs are. Apple provides that service to you directly under Apple’s terms. SLANT cannot see your collection, cannot download it, and holds no copy of it.
Sharing a collection with someone else is done through Apple’s own sharing, between your iCloud account and theirs. It does not pass through us.

What our scan service keeps
Our scan service is a custom-built utility that connects to Anthropic’s Claude API, moderates scanning against a user’s monthly allowance, and confirms that scanning requests come only from The Butler’s Book app. It stores:
a randomly generated install identifier, and how many of your ten starter scans you have used;
your subscription’s original transaction identifier, and a count of scans this month;
an App Attest key identifier and public key for your device;
a household code and the subscription that pays for it, if you share a collection;
a running total of what we have spent with Anthropic this month.
It does not store label photographs, wine names, tasting notes, or anything else about your collection. The install identifier is a random value created by the app. It is not your Apple ID, not your name, and not linked to any identity, because we never have one.
Scanning, and what Anthropic does with a label photograph
When you scan a label, the photograph is sent to the Claude API, an AI model made by Anthropic, which reads the producer, vintage, and appellation and suggests a tasting note. The app asks your permission before the first scan and sends nothing before you have given it. You can withdraw that permission at any time in Settings › Scanning.
Under Anthropic’s commercial terms, as published on the date above:
Your photographs and wine details are not used to train Anthropic’s models. Anthropic states that by default it will not use inputs or outputs from its commercial products for training. We do not send feedback and have not opted in to any such use.
Anthropic deletes inputs and outputs within 30 days of receiving or generating them. If Anthropic’s automated safety systems flag a request, it may be kept for longer — up to two years — under their policy.
The photograph is reduced in size on your device before it is sent, which also removes the photograph’s embedded information, including where it was taken. We do not store the photograph at any point; it passes through our scan service to Anthropic and back.
Who else is involved
Apple provides iCloud, which holds your collection; the App Store, which handles your subscription; and DeviceCheck and App Attest, which confirm the app is genuine.
Anthropic reads label photographs and wine details, as described above.
Cloudflare hosts our scan service, so requests to it pass through Cloudflare’s network.
We have no other processors, no advertising partners, and no analytics provider.
What we never do
We do not sell your information, and we have none to sell. We do not track you across apps or websites. We show no advertising, make no merchant or affiliate arrangements, and receive nothing from anyone if you buy a bottle. There is no social network in the app and no way for another person to see your collection unless you share it with them yourself.
Your choices and rights
Because there is no account, there is no profile for us to look up, correct, or hand over. What exists is described above, and you control all of it:
Your collection is yours to export at any time, as a spreadsheet, with no limit and no subscription needed. To export your data go to Settings › Your Collection › Sharing & Data › Export as Spreadsheet.
Deleting a collection from the Settings > Your Collection > Sharing & Data screen removes it from your devices and your iCloud. Removing the app removes its copy from that device; your iCloud copy can be deleted in your iPhone’s iCloud settings.
Withdrawing permission to scan stops anything being sent to Anthropic’s Claude API through our scanning service.
The install identifier can be reset by deleting and reinstalling the app, which starts a new one.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or California, you have rights of access, correction, deletion, and portability over personal information we hold. Write to us at the address below and we will answer. In practice we hold almost nothing that could identify you, and we will tell you plainly what we have.
Children
The Butler’s Book is about wine and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under the age at which they can lawfully be offered this app in their country.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes we will post the new version here and update the date at the top. If a change materially affects what leaves your phone, the app will tell you before it takes effect.
